Requirements for K-12 Teacher Licensure

1. To be accepted into Student Teaching, the student must:

 a. Achieve a 3.0 GPA overall and receive a grade of “B” or better in methods classes
(PED 2410, 3070, and 3140) and a minimum 3.0 GPA average in the major; or written certification of intellectual competence by an academic dean.
 b. Have completed all the Physical Education and Education coursework or permission of the coordinator of the Teacher Licensure Program.
 c. Complete the Department of Physical Education Application to Student Teach form.
 d. Students must receive a “Pass” on the Working Portfolios in PED 2410, 3070, and 3140.
 e. Through related course work, completion of a minimum of 80 clock hours of supervised field experience.
 f. Pass Praxis I, “Pre-professional Skills Test” in reading, writing, and mathematics, or recently adopted licensure testing alternatives.
 g. Pass the ETS Praxis II physical education content examination. If the student does not earn a passing score on the Praxis II examination for physical education, the physical education program coordinator may permit the student to develop and submit a written plan outlining the strategies by which he or she intends to strengthen identified content area. This plan must be approved by the physical education program coordinator.


2. To be recommended for licensure by the State of Vermont, a student must:

 a. Successfully complete and graduate from an approved program.
 b. Receive a grade of “B” or better in Student Teaching I and Student Teaching II and a “pass” in PED 4720 Seminar.
 c. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 and a B average (GPA of 3.0) in the field of major studies.
 d. Meet the required standard for the licensure portfolio.
 e. Exemplify in conduct and attitude the maturity, judgement, ethical standards, and dedication expected in the teaching profession.
 f.

Beginning in October of 2004, pass Praxis II examination in physical education
content knowledge, multiple choice or constructed responses essay.
