Events that are part of Soundings: An Introduction to the Liberal Arts are marked as A Soundings Event! Students should be aware that not all events on this calendar count for credit.
This calendar includes an extensive listing of Castleton's cultural events for fall 2008. Members of the community are welcome at these performances and lectures, although it should be noted that seating for 12:30 p.m. events is often limited and students get priority.

August 22
Minnesota Moon
Casella Theater

 Directed by Theatre Arts professor Harry McEnerny, this play by John Olive is the
coming of age story of two friends. Two high school buddies, Alan and Larry, are sitting in the moonlit yard of an abandoned farmhouse in southern Minnesota, drinking beer, laughing, sharing stories and saying good-bye: Alan leaves the next day for college.

Written by Brian Friel and directed by Steve Small, the play centers around a young Irishman, Gareth (Gar) O'Donnell, and his intended move to America, specifically Philadelphia. Gar's reasons for going to America, along with his secret love for his uncommunicative father and their final attempts to communicate, bring about a heart-wrenching conclusion. Tickets Required.

 Pop Goes History: What Does Coca Cola Say about America?
The 121-year old drink, Coca-Cola, is as seen as American as baseball and apple pie. But how did it become associated with the "American way?" How has it become solidified in our minds as an icon of American values and ideals? Through ads created for the beverage over the last 100+ years, this presentation will trace the history of the beverage and examine how the ads reflect American politics and priorities.

Vermont Symphony Orchestra: Made in VT Music Festival

 As part of the fifteenth Made in Vermont Music Festival, VSO will perform works, including Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Grieg’s Holberg Suite and Lullaby by Gershwin.   A group of vibrant women recall their experience as Peace Corps volunteers helping to eradicate smallpox in rural Afghanistan in the late 60's. Tested to their physical and emotional limits, they confronted disease, extremes of climate and terrain, and cultural taboos. Produced by vaccinator Jill Vickers and Castleton’s own Jody Bergedick.
Q & A with producers and the vaccinators will follow the showing.

Robert Kirshner: Our Expanding Universe

A Harvard professor, Kirshner is an author of 200 research papers dealing with supernovae, the large-scale distribution of galaxies, and the size and shape of the Universe. His recent work on the acceleration of the Universe was dubbed the “Science Breakthrough of the Year” by Science Magazine. He was featured prominently in the recent PBS Nova series Origins.

 This Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy in three acts by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart was the basis for the 1938 Academy Award winning film directed by Frank Capra. The questions of what constitutes a good family and what is truly important in life are seen on stage. Susan Haefner of the Weston Playhouse will be directing this story of Alice and Tony, their opposing families and dinner party with police and fireworks. Tickets Required.
