Castleton Student Initiative:
a historic construction and renovation project,
$25.7 million for new, enlarged, and improved facilities

“The Castleton Student Initiative will reinvigorate student life and learning, and change the face of the Castleton campus,” President Dave Wolk said in announcing the Castleton Student Initiative project in October. “It is the largest investment in the history of Castleton and the Vermont State Colleges, and it holds the key to our future.”

“The Castleton Student Initiative will provide the competitive edge that we need to continue to attract high quality students now and in the future.”

Anticipated Schedule of Projects

Work on the inside of Glenbrook Gymnasium, summer 2008. Complete by early fall.

Work on the Campus Center, stadium, fields, and the addition to the gymnasium begins in the late summer, pending Act 250 approval.

Campus Center closed during the spring 2009 semester.

Projects complete in the fall of 2009.

The Castleton Student Initiative includes:

• A renovated, enlarged, and modernized Campus Center with student activity spaces, new conference areas, expanded college store and mail room, new convenience store, improved dining facilities, and radio station. The Campus Center will achieve Leed Silver Certification as a green building.

• An addition to Leavenworth Hall which will include a state-of-the-art TV studio and related spaces to be determined.

• A small performance space or black box theater suitable for student written and directed plays and for student recitals, located in the old TV studio in the Fine Arts Center.

• A renovated competition gymnasium with a new hardwood floor and permanent, handicapped-accessible seating that meets today’s standards. The work on this project begins in May 2008 and will be complete by the end of October.

• An addition to Glenbrook Gymnasium with much needed locker room space and fitness areas.

• A state-of-the-art artificial turf field suitable for intercollegiate soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, football, and numerous intramural sports; a small stadium with lighting, permanent seating, a press booth, restrooms and concession stand.

• An athletic and recreational complex including baseball and softball fields, an outdoor basketball court, skateboard park, and a practice field.
