Woodruff Institute for School Leadership
The purpose of the Woodruff Institute is to create the next generation of school leaders for Vermont, Northern Massachusetts and Eastern New York State. These leaders will guide their schools through the turbulent waters of school change driven by the winds of profound social change. These leaders will lead their schools to challenge all students as well as administer the school’s programs and policies.
The Woodruff Institute leads students to a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership or Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study and endorsement as a Vermont principal or director of special education, and is designed as an accessible program for working professionals across the region.
Successful candidates
will a regular teaching license will be recommended for Principal Licensure in the State of Vermont. Candidates who hold a Special Education Endorsement are eligible for both the Principal and Special Education Director License. New York and Massachusetts residents may apply directly to their state for licensure.
The Woodruff Institute is:
Practical - the internship is based on a Mediated Achievement Plan (MAP) in the aspiring leader’s current school. Your students will gain from your MAP as you learn to apply your skills and knowledge to future work with greater responsibility.
Balanced - theory is consciously related to practice at each class.
Coherent - the cohort moves together through a sequence of “dialogues” that build upon each other. These dialogues focus on building inclusive schools that meet the needs of all students.
Supportive - student colleagues support each other as a professional learning community. Mentors and faculty support students in the field, in their classes and for one year following graduation as candidates assume leadership roles in area schools.
Rigorous - the best practitioners and academics from the region combine their efforts to work with Woodruff students. The work is too important to compromise!
Accessible - Woodruff “Dialogues” take place once per month on Friday afternoon and Saturdays during the academic year and for concentrated weeks during the summer. Students can access the Woodruff Institute from any part of Vermont, Eastern New York State or Northern Massachusetts. Students may elect a three-year plan rather than the usual two-year plan. |
